I find mine easier to steer stopped than most cars w/o power steering just because of lack of weight

Takes some getting used to though.
I may have screwed up today. I was warming up the engine and I really listened to the carbs. They sound awesome.
If I could find somebody who can really tune triple webers I might like them more. At least one of them is really rich.
I think the valves need adjusting too. And the timing may need to be set.

Adjusting the valves is fairly simple. I used to do it in 1/2 an hour.

Balancing the carbs was also not that hard if you get the proper airflow calibration meter. I never balanced 3 carbs, only 2 SU carbs. Shit, I kept my meter for decades after getting rid of my 240Z. I maybe still have it somewhere but don't know where I put it.

Yeah somebody on HZ was telling me that Webers weren't so temperamental. And he told me about a VW tool that is great for balancing Weber triples. I'm not looking for huge power so if the carbs were tuned right it might be fast enough. Really it's not even the power. It's the smell. I guess one of the carbs is rich. The sound is great and if the carbs were tuned properly and wouldn't need constant attention, I could probably live with it. I still like EFI more than carbs but if carbs are tuned well and stay that way for a decent period of time then who needs sensors. I had an offer for a straightup trade today for a complete L28et setup. Unfortunately the guy is in Tennessee so from a logistical view that doesn't look good.
I have a complete SU round top setup I could run with while I refresh an L28 motor but I don't want to build anything. Maybe clean up the head ports and runners a bit and install a new timing chain set. No more monster motor builds though.
I think what my car needs more than anything right now is to be taken out and run hard. I believe the PO babied the car too much. I need to get it inspected and registered and take it out and blow the soot out of it

Ok I'm legal now. Got it inspected today and got Texass plates on it. I was amazed at how much attention I got (ok the car got) while I was out.
I dunno if they liked it a lot or were just trying to figure out what it is
And the car has a little more power than I thought. Maybe I was too nervous on that first drive. It will definitely smoke the tires and it's sneaky fast. I need to get busy now and get a 280zx distributor and then adjust the valves and check the timing. Or the other way round.
I need to see about getting one of those sync tools Scott mentioned too. Those carbs just aren't quite right. Too much raw gas smell.
Could be the valves are that far off or maybe an internal leak? There is no visible gas leak.
Also kicked the tailpipe for the first time. I knew that was gonna happen eventually
If I get a tool to sync the carbs then I'll have to learn how to use it. Then I'll have more money and time invested in carbs. Then I''ll be more inclined to keep them

I bought a closeout 280zx dizzy day before yesterday and got it today. I bet everybody who has ever bought a part from me wishes I shipped as fast as Rockauto does
Now I need a 280zx dizzy bracket,a 280zx ignition module, and a hotter coil. I might try my z31 alternator on for size too. I get to try my hand at adjusting the valves and setting the timing too. And I scored a carb synchrometer off ebay.

It's the 2-221 that came with the Spearco z31 kit. I've had several people who were going to buy it but nobody did. The ad is still up:

I sold the piping kit when I decided to relocate the turbo on the shiro but I have several bends and everything else to plumb it for a little extra. I was hoping to turbo the 240 but that is a lot more involved than I thought.

Hmmmm, do I need/want it now or should I repair these wrecked cars first? I'll think about it.

Remember those cracks around the body mounted part of my spoiler? Supposedly from a tool box accident or something.
I was taking some detailed pics because I was thinking of selling the car.
I was looking at the pics of those cracks and saw what looked like rust so I started poking around. It was definitely rust. Check it out:

This is what I found:

I wirebrushed it back to where the rust stops. I'm going to grind down to bare metal and the use some rust treatment. I don't know yet what I'll do after that. The spoiler part is still good and could be reinstalled. Piece of cake for a good bodyman. I'm not a good bodyman
I found some minor rust at the bottom of the hatch. That I can fix.
On a plus note, there is no rust in the floor of the hatch and only a tiny bit on the body where the hatch closes.
I also got the electronic ignition almost finished. I need some very small bolts and nuts to attach the HEI module to a heatsink and it's done.

Don't take this the wrong way, because I'm being legit not an asshole. I SERIOUSLY hope your front floors are fine, because mine has no rust on the rear floor and basically none around the hatch...and mines a rust bucket.

You're a legit asshole
You didn't see the pics of the floor pans? No rust. None on the frame rails either. Not on the part I can see at least.
The only thing I haven't done yet is jack the car up and put it on stands to check the underbody really good.
I am a little worried that there might be some rust on the body under the spoiler piece molded in on the other side.

just reminding you your car is gorgeous

but in texas do you have to have a front tag, just wondering where people put them on 240z's to make them look alright...

Mike, getting rid of it so soon?

zeefsranger, what I did on my 77Z was to make a bracket to center it under the bumper. I was not a fan of the front plate on the side of the bumper where Nissan put the mounting for the plate.

Here is a picture of a 77 Z.

@zeefsranger: Texas law does require a front plate. I keep the front plate in the car along with the excuse of "sorry officer but I haven't had the car long and just haven't got around to mounting the plate yet"
Maybe I'll see if I can mount it aerodynamically
@ Flying T:
In my philosophy everything is for sale. I got a lot of interest in the car. Had some interesting trades proposed and heard from some people who considered the car to be worth much more than I paid for it. I love the way the car looks but the possibility of selling and coming out of the deal with a 280z L28et or a 944 turbo were too good not to consider. The rust under the right wing of the spoiler changes everything though.
I had people who were ready to make a deal and were just waiting for me to decide. I can't count on that now. In the 240z world this rust would be considered relatively minor but serious enough to change the value significantly.
